YESSENIA FUNES | Survive

The air leaves her lungs

And she shivers with fear.

She quakes and shakes.

There’s no sound to hear.

Where is she?

She doesn’t know.

One thing she does know

Is she is

Alone.

The smile covers her gasp.

The shaking disguised by a laugh.

“The joy,” they say

When they speak of her.

“The pain,” she whispers

When she thinks of him.

It hurts each morning

And cuts each night.

Some days, without warning,

The darkness shuts the light.

So she holds her chest

And looks to the sky.

Alone she is,

But she’s also

Alive.

“Survive, survive, survive . . . ”
